Recently, a negatively worded sign was posted on trees in an act of vandalism on the Hudson’s Hope South Treaty Land Entitlement selection of West Moberly First Nations (WMFN). Hudson’s Hope and WMFN denounce this act of vandalism and wish to use this as an opportunity to reflect on the important relationships within our thriving communities.
This unfortunate sign does not reflect WMFN’s connection to Hudson’s Hope. WMFN’s Chief and Council maintains a strong, positive, and constructive working relationship with the Hudson’s Hope Mayor and Council.
The Hudson’s Hope South selection is part of WMFN’s Treaty Land Entitlement settlement, fulfilling a longstanding commitment to provide lands promised to WMFN over 100 years ago.
Treaties are not tools to divide. Treaties create opportunities for understanding, economic collaboration and partnership, and community-led stewardship of the land. These living and legally binding agreements support the responsible care of the land, water, and all living beings.
Together, Hudson’s Hope and WMFN look forward to continuing our collaboration in the transfer and stewardship of the Hudson’s Hope South selection. As neighbours and partners, we have a shared responsibility to ensure safety, well-being, and opportunities and benefits for all.
More information about Treaty 8
Treaty 8 is a foundational agreement signed in 1899 between First Nations and the Crown that includes territory in northeastern British Columbia. This agreement guarantees Treaty 8 members’ rights to hunt, fish, and maintain their traditional way of life, while sharing the land with all British Columbians. As British Columbians we are all treaty people.
